✦ Quick Facts — Watamu Sunsets
Why Watamu sunsets are different
Watamu faces west across Mida Creek and the Indian Ocean, which means the sun drops directly into the water almost every evening. The sky turns from gold to deep amber to violet in a show that lasts a good 45 minutes. Locals have turned sunset watching into a daily ritual, and the best spots have built their entire identity around it.
What makes Watamu special is the variety. You can watch from bohemian nets over the creek, from a pizza cushion on the beach, from a floating restaurant in a mangrove channel, or from a Lebanese rooftop with a cocktail. Every spot has a completely different personality.
Timing your sunset
Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot. In high season (December to March) the popular venues fill up by 5pm. Check the exact sunset time on your phone — it varies from 6:15pm in June to 6:45pm in December.
Lichthaus — the bohemian favourite
Lichthaus sits at the very end of Watamu Road where it meets the creek. The setting is genuinely magical — low cushions, lanterns strung through the trees, and those famous nets suspended over the water where you can lie back and watch the sky change colour. The bohemian aesthetic grew organically from years of travellers and artists passing through.
The food is simple local cuisine elevated to something special — grilled fish, coconut curries, fresh juices. On weekends there is live music, often Swahili fusion or acoustic sets, and the dancing that follows is spontaneous and infectious. Lichthaus also has a small boutique selling locally made jewellery and beachwear.
The honest downside: it is the most popular sunset spot in Watamu and gets crowded, especially Fridays and Saturdays. Book ahead on weekends.
Lichthaus insider tip
The nets are reserved for groups with a small surcharge. After sunset most groups leave for dinner — arrive around 6:30pm and you can often grab one for free.
Sunset Beach — pizza, live music, and dancing on the sand
Sunset Beach is where Watamu goes for Italian pizza and live music with an ocean view. The claim of best pizza in Watamu is genuinely earned — thin crust, wood-fired, proper Italian ingredients. The setting is barefoot on the beach with cushions and low tables, and the transition from relaxed sunset drinks to full dance floor happens naturally as the musicians build the energy.
The live music nights draw local and visiting musicians playing everything from reggae to Afrobeats. The crowd is a genuine mix of Italian tourists, Kenyan weekenders, and long-term residents. During events the kitchen gets overwhelmed, so order your pizza early.
Sunset Beach tip
Order your pizza before sunset. Once the music starts the kitchen gets backed up and you could wait an hour. Go barefoot — everyone else does.
Prawns Lake — the quiet local secret
If crowds are not your style, Prawns Lake is the antidote. Tucked away from the tourist circuit, this intimate spot on a small lake near the creek draws mostly locals and long-term residents. The prawn samosas are legendary and sell out every evening. Prices are significantly lower than the tourist-facing venues.
The atmosphere is peaceful and unpretentious. Simple chairs by the water, the sky turning gold, no DJ, no scene — just sunset and good conversation. For couples or anyone craving quiet over spectacle, this is the spot.
Prawns Lake tip
Call ahead and reserve prawn samosas — they are made fresh each day and sell out by sunset.
Crab Shack Dabaso — the wild creek adventure
Crab Shack is not just a restaurant — it is an experience. Located on the edge of Mida Creek in Dabaso, it sits in a natural mangrove setting that feels genuinely wild. The crab samosas alone are worth the trip. On some evenings the floating restaurant is open — a platform on the creek where you eat surrounded by water and mangroves as the sun sets.
The vibe is authentically African in a way the polished tourist spots cannot replicate. The floating restaurant requires advance booking and there is a minimum spend, but for a special evening it is unforgettable.
Crab Shack tip
Book in advance for the floating restaurant. There is a minimum spend. Ask if it is open when you call — it depends on tides and season.
Kokomo — gourmet Lebanese with ocean views
Kokomo is the most upmarket sunset option and earns the higher prices. The Lebanese-inspired menu is extensive and consistently excellent — hummus, falafel, grilled meats, mezze platters. The cocktail menu is creative and original with drinks you will not find anywhere else on the Kenyan coast.
The setting has a cozy oriental feel with comfortable seating, warm lighting, and music that perfectly matches the mood. This is the spot for a date, a celebration, or treating yourself. Come with friends so you can order several dishes and share.
Kokomo tip
Go with 3-4 people to try multiple dishes. The mezze platter for sharing is best value. Cocktails are premium but genuinely excellent.
